When dealing with the complex problem of “space and demand” in settlement design, the conventional “blueprint” design method and thinking model architects follow often bring out works that are homogeneous, monotonous and less likely to respond to all the spatial needs. By analyzing generative design models and methods,an AutoCons sustainable settlement model based on shape grammar is proposed. Taking New Yuezi Village in Zhangqiu as an example, the generative design process “driven by grammar rule” instead of “controlled by design blueprint” is discussed. The conclusions are as follows. Shape grammar is a generative design method that can correlate the demand data with the grammar rules, and its graphical visual derivation makes the rules simple and easy to understand. The AutoCons model provides graphical and code definitions of grammar rules, allowing architects to add constraints and update grammar rules as needed. The “rules” based design process is superior to the “blueprint” based design process in the phased control of spatial form.
